About Smithsonite

Smithsonite  is named after the English mineralogist James Smithson, who first identified the crystal in 1802. James Smithson was also the founding donor of the Smithsonian Institution.

Smithsonite comes in many colors, the translucent blue, green, and yellows being the most sought after.

  • Light to dark blue or green - with copper impurities
  • Light to dark pink or purple - with cobalt impurities
  • Light to dark yellow - with cadmium impurities
  • Brown and red - with iron impurities

Chemical Composition: ZnCo3
Hardness: 4-4.5
Locations Found: Arkansas, Colorado, California, Utah, New Mexico, Wisconsin, and Iowa. Greece, Namibia, Australia, and Mexico.

Care of SMITHSONITE

Smithsonite is a softer stone and can be cleaned using a soft cloth and warm water.   Do not use abrasive cleaners..  As with most gemstones, ultrasonic cleaners and steamers are not recommended. Store in a soft case away from hard objects to prevent scratches.
